Discover the Secrets of Witches of the Stolen Moon’s Dark Fantasy World
In this world where some are born as Magical Folk with ancient elvish blood in their veins and unusual powers, powerful men fear them, hate them, and call them witches. Magic and witchcraft are illegal in most of the kingdom and are punished by burning on a pyre.
This false fear of magic and witches has driven some of the noble families to defend themselves with ancient artifacts and spell books from the Darkelven times. This dark form of magic is studied by some members of the noble class in secret, and its artifacts are coveted and hidden.
Thirteen-year-old Elowyn was born with the ability to cast an illusion of herself standing right before your eyes, long after she has already slipped away. And that is exactly why Lord Dorian took her from her village and used her to steal a dark magical crown that he coveted from Baron Umbrecht. That is why the baron’s mage hunters and hellhounds are searching the countryside for them, and why they’re hiding in an abandoned fortress in the middle of the cold wastes of Netabenezaar.
The story begins when three witches arrive at the gates of Netabenezaar seeking Dorian and the stolen artifact. Dorian has descended into madness and leaps to his death rather than give up his precious crown. Now Elown must strike up a bargain with these witches. She’ll help them find the crown, which Dorian hid somewhere inside the fortress and, in exchange, they will take her back to her home village. Once the crown is recovered, she finds herself swept back across the desert in the witches’ wagon and into their world of crime and magic. Before they will take her back to her village, they agree to do one last job for the Baron—find a moon shaped amulet that was stolen years ago.
When Elowyn protests and reminds them of the deal they made, the witches have no choice but to take Elowyn along. The adventure takes us through the ghostly forest of Dreadmire and into the ghoul-filled Necropolis of Thysst Lazúl looking for the stolen moon-shaped amulet. Soon it becomes clear that the Baron may have another reason to want this amulet and crown, and they learn they may be helping him open the gates of the Netherworld.
Why You’ll Love It
The novel is rich with memorable characters, settings, and creatures you won’t soon forget. If you’ve already read The Witch Child, you will be familiar with mage hunters and hellhounds, but you’ll also encounter the ghosts who live in the ruined forest of Dreadmire, the horrible ghouls who inhabit catacombs, and the deadly and mysterious watchers.
Our companions on this adventure are the three thieving witches: Verbena, Rowan, and Cassia. In a world where witches are persecuted, they have learned to survive by selling their unique services. Verbena can speak to the dead, Rowan can open locked doors and chests with her mind, and Cassia has the power to charm people—especially men— into believing anything she wants.
Though Verbena serves as the mother hen for the other two, they often roll their eyes as she attributes everyday occurrences to the actions of spirits and fairies. While Rowan criticizes Cassia for using her charms on wealthy men, Cassia often dismisses Rowan’s critiques as jealousy, claiming she has all the charm and half the warmth of a moth-eaten blanket. The banter and personalities is what has made the witches favorites for those who’ve read the book.
